Pendle Takes 17 Percent of DeFi Trading in Tokenized Stocks

The yield trading protocol is now the second largest decentralised venue for tokenized equities, according to Crypto Briefing, a position built in a market that barely existed a year ago.

Pendle, a decentralised protocol built for trading the future yield of interest bearing tokens, has become the second largest DeFi venue for tokenized stocks with roughly a 17 percent share of the activity, Crypto Briefing reported. Tokenized stocks are blockchain tokens that track the price of a listed share, issued either by a regulated intermediary holding the underlying stock or synthetically against collateral.

The oddity is the venue. Pendle's core business is splitting a yield bearing asset into a principal component and a yield component so the two can be traded separately, which is a fixed income structure rather than an equity one. A protocol built for that purpose turning up near the top of the share tokens league table says something about where tokenized equity trading is actually happening: not only on the order books of purpose built exchanges, but inside general DeFi infrastructure that happens to be able to hold the tokens.

Why a yield venue ends up with equities

Share tokens that pay dividends, or that sit inside a wrapper earning something, are structurally similar to any other cash flow bearing token from the point of view of a yield splitting protocol. Once a tokenized stock can be deposited, it can be decomposed, and the pricing of that decomposition is a trade in its own right, distinct from a directional bet on the share.

That makes the 17 percent share a measure of financial engineering rather than of retail demand for owning Apple or Tesla onchain. A large slice of it is likely to be positioning against yield and term rather than against the share price, though the breakdown behind the figure was not published.

The denominator is small

Context matters here. The DeFi market in tokenized stocks remains a fraction of the volume these instruments do on centralised venues, and a fraction again of the ordinary equity market. Second place in a small market is still second place in a small market, and share figures move violently when the base is thin.

What the ranking does establish is that the venue mix for tokenized equities is not settling into the shape anyone drew at the start. The expectation through 2025 and 2026 was that trading would consolidate onto regulated tokenized stock exchanges with issuer relationships. Instead a yield protocol has taken a double digit share, which suggests the plumbing is being assembled by whoever can hold the asset rather than by whoever was licensed to list it.

What to watch

The useful next data point is whether Pendle's share holds once tokenized stock issuance broadens beyond the handful of tickers that dominate the board today. A share built on a few deeply traded names behaves very differently from one built across hundreds, and the concentration of the underlying token set is the variable that decides which it is.
