Morgan Stanley expects to support tokenised equities by the first quarter of 2027 and is already building the underlying infrastructure, the head of its digital asset strategy said, according to The Block. Tokenised equities are blockchain records that represent an interest in a listed share, settled on a ledger rather than through the conventional clearing chain.

What makes this notable is the date rather than the intent. Large banks have been describing tokenisation as inevitable for several years without committing to a quarter. A named target of early 2027 converts a research-desk position into a delivery schedule, which is the kind of commitment that internal budgets and vendor contracts hang off.

Infrastructure is the slow part

The build is where the time goes. A broker-dealer supporting tokenised shares has to solve custody of the token, reconciliation between the ledger record and the book of the underlying security, corporate actions such as dividends and splits, and the regulatory reporting that applies to any equity position regardless of the rails it sits on. None of that is novel technology. All of it is work, and it is the reason the gap between announcement and availability is measured in quarters.

The bank said it is monitoring how the wider industry develops while it builds, which is a reasonable posture in a market where the standards are not settled. There is as yet no single agreed answer to how a tokenised share should be structured legally, how it should be made redeemable for the underlying, or which venue it should clear on.

The company it is joining

The announcement lands in a week thick with equivalent moves. StoneX raised its price target on Securitize to $18 from $12, citing revenue from the firm's tokenised stock trading platform on Solana, according to The Block. Bybit has started offering trading in more than 1,000 US stocks and ETFs funded with USDC, with Alpaca executing and holding the underlying shares, The Defiant reported. Those are brokerages and token issuers. Morgan Stanley is a full-service investment bank, and the constituency it would bring is different: clients with mandates, compliance departments and a preference for a name they already have paperwork with.

What the IMF found about the market they would be entering

The market in its current form is small and uneven. The International Monetary Fund put the tokenised stock market at roughly $2.3bn and found it more volatile and less liquid than conventional equities, with more than half of trading taking place outside US market hours, according to Decrypt's account of the analysis. A venue of that size does not need a bank the size of Morgan Stanley. A venue five years from now might.

Between now and the first quarter of 2027 there are five quarters, an election cycle in the United States and an unsettled regulatory position on both custody and venue registration. A target date is a statement of intent with a number attached, and it can move. The useful test is whether other banks of comparable size start naming quarters of their own in the next few months, because the thing that turns a single announcement into an industry timetable is competitors refusing to be the last one live.
