DTCC Names 25 Securities for Its First Tokenized Batch

The clearing house that settles US securities will issue tokens backed one for one by securities already held at DTC, starting on Canton and Besu, with Stellar and Circle's Arc expected in 2027.

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation has set out a rollout covering 25 securities, each to be represented by a token backed one for one by the security sitting at the Depository Trust Company, its central securities depository, The Defiant reports. The first deployments are on Canton and Besu, two permissioned blockchains built for regulated institutions, with Stellar and Circle's Arc network anticipated in 2027.

DTCC is the plumbing underneath American securities trading. Essentially every US share and bond settles through it, and the DTC leg is where the legal record of ownership is held. That makes this a structurally different exercise from most tokenization to date: the token is not issued by a broker holding a position, it is issued against the depository record itself.

Why the backing matters

Almost all tokenized equity in circulation today is a claim on an intermediary. A custodian buys the share, holds it and mints a token; the holder owns the custodian's promise. A token issued one for one against securities at DTC collapses one layer of that chain, because the depository is where the share already legally rests rather than one more balance sheet standing in front of it.

It also explains the choice of venue. Canton and Besu are permissioned networks, meaning participation is restricted to approved institutions rather than open to any address. That suits a settlement utility whose members are banks and broker-dealers, and it avoids the question of what happens when a regulated instrument lands in an anonymous wallet.

The 2027 line

Stellar and Circle's Arc are the more interesting part of the plan, because they point further out from the permissioned perimeter. Arc is Circle's own network, built around its dollar stablecoin, and Stellar is a public chain with an established record in payments and tokenized funds. Their inclusion is anticipated rather than live, and the stated timing is 2027.

Twenty-five securities is a pilot in scale, not a market. But the number of instruments matters less than who is issuing them. When the depository tokenizes, the token inherits the legal clarity of the depository record, which is the thing synthetic stock tokens have never been able to buy.

What this competes with

Alongside this, tokenized equities issued by exchanges and brokers have grown quickly, with issuer objections and custodial structures defining what holders actually own. A DTCC-issued token does not compete with those on speed or on access, since it will be available to institutions on permissioned rails. It competes on the only axis that has been missing, which is the quality of the claim.

What to watch next is whether the 25 securities expand into a standing programme and whether the 2027 public-chain leg survives contact with the compliance work. Infrastructure timelines of this kind slip more often than they accelerate.
